Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has launched a new mentorship programme that will bring former Kenyan football stars closer to the country’s national teams.
The programme will be led by former players and football legends, including former Harambee Stars striker Dennis Oliech, who will use their experience to guide current and emerging players.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed announced the initiative on October 2, saying the federation wants players to learn from the experiences of those who came before them.
FKF Said Legends to Guide National Teams in the Mentorship Programme
Mohammed said the programme will give national team players an opportunity to learn directly from former stars who understand the challenges that come with a football career.
“Within Football Kenya Federation, we will now have a mentorship programme led by former players, led by legends of the game in this country, so that they can guide and they can provide leadership skills and share with you their experience in terms of what they have gone through, so you can become better footballers,” Mohammed said.
He said FKF wants the initiative to help players avoid mistakes made by previous generations and give them a clearer path in their careers.
“This is a new initiative from the Football Kenya Federation, from FKF, to ensure that you don’t repeat the mistakes that the ones before you have done before or the challenges they’ve encountered, so that you can have a better pathway,” he added.
The programme will also prepare players for life after their playing careers.
“After your football career, you can have or make a livelihood from the sport and you can be better citizens of this country,” Mohammed said.

Oliech, Otieno and Other Legends Meet Emerging Stars
The announcement followed a meeting between football legends and the Emerging Stars, Kenya’s Under-23 national team, during their preparations for the return leg of their U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania.
Mohammed visited the team in training alongside former Harambee Stars players Dennis Oliech, Musa Otieno, Innocent Mutiso and James Situma.
The former players encouraged the Emerging Stars and reminded them of the honour and responsibility that comes with representing Kenya at international level. Mohammed said their involvement reflected FKF’s plan to use the experience of former players to support the current generation.

Mentorship to Cover Life Beyond Football
The new programme is expected to focus not only on football development but also on leadership, discipline, decision-making and life after retirement.
Oliech, who is among Kenya’s most recognised former internationals, has previously spoken about the importance of preparing young players for the realities of professional football.
The former Harambee Stars captain has argued that players need proper guidance before moving abroad, particularly on adapting to new environments and dealing with the pressures that come with professional football.
FKF’s official history lists Oliech and Michael Olunga as joint second-highest scorers for Harambee Stars with 34 goals each, behind William Ouma’s 35.
