Absa Appoints New CFO Following Promotion of Yusuf Omari to CEO Role

Absa Bank Kenya has appointed Diana Mwaniki as its Acting Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective July 1, 2026, pending regulatory approval.

In a statement dated July 2, Absa said Diana Mwaniki will take over the finance leadership role following the appointment of the former Chief Financial Officer, Yusuf Omari, as Interim Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

“ Absa Bank Kenya PLC has announced the appointment of Diana Mwaniki in the acting capacity of Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective 1 July 2026, pending regulatory approval,” read part of the statement.

Yusuf Omari assumed the interim leadership position after the resignation of former Managing Director and CEO Abdi Mohamed.

Diana Mwaniki Takes Over as Acting CFO at Absa Bank Kenya

Absa stated that Diana Mwaniki steps into the acting CFO position after serving as Absa Bank Kenya’s Head of Financial Decision Support since joining in September 2022.

She will oversee the bank’s finance function, providing strategic financial leadership and oversight as the bank continues to implement its growth strategy and deliver value to customers, shareholders, and other stakeholders.

Additionally, Yusuf Omari noted that Diana has played a key role in strengthening the institution’s financial planning and decision-support capabilities.

He argued that her extensive financial expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to excellence would help ensure continuity in the bank’s financial stewardship as it continues implementing its strategic priorities.

“Diana has been instrumental in strengthening our financial planning and decision-support capabilities since joining Absa. She brings deep financial expertise, strong leadership and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Her appointment ensures continuity in our financial stewardship as we continue executing our strategic priorities and creating long-term value for our customers, colleagues, shareholders and the communities we serve,” said Yusuf Omari.

Career and Educational Background

According to the bank, Diana Mwaniki has more than 17 years of experience in the financial services sector, having built a career in financial strategy, performance management, governance, internal controls, and risk management.

Before joining Absa, she held senior finance leadership positions within the banking industry, where she was responsible for strengthening financial controls, enhancing governance frameworks, and driving effective financial oversight.

The bank said her appointment reflects its commitment to maintaining strong financial stewardship and ensuring leadership continuity.

Diana Mwaniki holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the United States International University and a Bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance from Moi University.

She is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) and has completed executive leadership training at Duke University.
