Kenyan radio presenter Alex Mwakideu has opened up about his shocking hearing loss after more than two decades working in the Kenyan broadcasting industry.

In an emotional video that he posted on his social media pages, Alex says he has lived a very loud life, which has eventually impaired his ability to hear.

“In the past 22 years, my life has been surrounded by big sounds: studio, club, kwa gari; it has been a loud life,” he said.

Alex explains how his life has been so loud because he was in the entertainment and broadcasting industry, saying that he was making millions of listeners listen to him.

Alex In Broadcast

“As I was broadcasting throughout my life as a broadcaster, as I was helping millions of listeners hear me, I did not know that one day I would be struggling to hear them,” he said.

The radio presenter said he has been in broadcasting for twenty-two years and he believes it is what has caused his loss of hearing because he has been living a very loud life.

According to Alex, his hearing loss became significant when he was unable to hear people on normal occasions such as conversations with his wife and children.

He further said that when he is eating or brushing his teeth, he has to stop to hear what his wife and children are saying while talking to him.

When The Problem Started

“When I am brushing my teeth, and my wife is talking to me, I have to stop to hear. At the dinner table, if my children are talking, I have to stop chewing,” Alex said.

At first, Alex says he thought he could not hear well because of earwax before seeking medical attention from a doctor but the problem still persisted.

He then underwent a hearing test and a middle ear assessment when he found out he had moderate sensory neural hearing loss that cannot be corrected through either medication or surgery.

After medical tests, he says he spent 430,000 on his personalized hearing aids, which help him to converse and hear others without difficulty.

His Career in Broadcasting

Alex’s broadcasting career began at Baraka FM, which is in Mombasa, before he went to Radio Maisha and Milele FM, where he had a chance to serve as the head of radio.

He has worked at Milele FM for five years before he left to join Radio 47, where he is currently hosting Breakfast 47 alongside Emmanuel Mwashumbe.

However, despite what broadcasting has done to him as of his gearing, he still says that if given a chance to choose again, he will still choose the broadcast industry.
