DCI Hunts Suspects in Viral Thika Road Torching Video Amid Matatu Strike Aftermath

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced a hunt for individuals involved in the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during recent protests, amid the ongoing matatu strike.

In a statement dated May 19, DCI said it has received the footage and is currently analysing it, as it is believed to feature individuals among the prime suspects in the criminal act.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has received and is currently analysing viral video footage that is believed to feature individuals among the prime suspects involved in the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during today’s protests,” read part of the statement.

The investigative body added that the destruction of property and risk to human life witnessed during the incident is being treated with seriousness as part of ongoing criminal investigations.

DCI Launches Hunt for Suspects Captured in Viral Thika Road Vehicle Torching Video

According to DCI, the case remains active, with detectives pursuing crucial leads aimed at identifying and apprehending all those involved.

The agency noted that efforts are ongoing to establish the identities of those captured in the viral footage and determine their roles in the incident.

In addition, DCI called on members of the public who may recognise any individuals seen in the footage or who may have relevant information to come forward and assist with the investigation.

Information can be shared at the nearest police station or through the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline.

Further, the National Police Service reiterated its commitment to upholding public safety, protecting property, and ensuring that individuals who exploit protests for criminal activities are brought to justice in accordance with the law.

Kenyans Torch Down UDA’s Politician Mazda CX-5 in Thika Road 

The vehicle belonging to a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politician was set ablaze during chaotic scenes that unfolded as protesters clashed along the busy highway, leaving motorists stranded.

Priscilla Larweh Martey, the owner, has expressed interest in vying for the Kilimani Ward MCA seat on the ruling UDA party ticket.

Images and videos circulating online showed the black Mazda CX-5 engulfed in flames, with thick smoke rising into the air as commuters faced major disruptions caused by road blockades, transport paralysis, and sporadic confrontations between protesters and police.

According to reports, angry protesters cornered her after spotting a UDA flag inside the vehicle before setting it ablaze.

Priscilla later shared photos of the burnt vehicle on social media, stating that it was her vehicle, but she was happy to have survived the angry mob

“This is my vehicle. Gone but happy to have survived.”
