KeNHA to Demolish Illegal Structures, Remove Traders Along Section of Mombasa Road

Motorists using Mombasa Road will experience a temporary traffic disruption later this month after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the closure of a section of the Nairobi-bound carriageway between Airtel Complex and General Motors.

In a public notice issued on June 18, 2026, KeNHA said the affected section of the Nairobi-bound carriageway along Mombasa Road (A8) will be closed to traffic from 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, to 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

According to the KeNHA, the temporary closure is intended to facilitate the installation of fabricated footbridge beams for the Airtel Footbridge across the Nairobi-bound carriageway.

KeNHA stated that the construction works are part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements, which are aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety along the busy highway.

Traffic Management

To minimize disruption during the closure period, the KeNHA has provided a traffic management plan that will have motorists diverted through alternative routes around the construction site.

The diversion plan indicates that vehicles travelling towards Nairobi will be rerouted through the Southern Bypass service roads before reconnecting with Mombasa Road beyond the affected section.

KeNHA has urged road users to cooperate with traffic officers and who will be deployed on the site to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the construction period.

Road Safety

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of the Nairobi-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8), between Airtel Complex and General Motors, will be temporarily closed to traffic from Saturday, June 27, 2026, to Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 9.00 pm to 10.00 am,” the notice reads.

KeNHA further noted that the closure is necessary to allow for the safe installation of the footbridge beams across the carriageway.

Motorists planning to use Mombasa Road during the affected period have been advised to anticipate possible delays, follow the designated diversion routes and adhere to instructions issued by traffic officers.
