Maraga Speaks Out on Shakira Wafula Sexual Harassment Allegations

The United Green Movement Party (UGM) has issued a detailed statement responding to sexual harassment allegations raised publicly by political activist Shakira Wafula concerning the 2027 presidential campaign of former Chief Justice David Maraga.
In the statement dated June 3, 2026, the party addressed claims made by Shakira on her X platform on June 1 and June 2, where she alleged that Maraga’s campaign sidelined women after mishandling sexual harassment allegations.
UGM clarified that the allegations were not directed at Maraga himself, but at a senior party official.
The party stated that Shakira and two other women first raised the matter orally during a virtual meeting on October 11, 2025.
UGM Allegations
According to UGM, the women were advised to formally submit written complaints to allow the matter to be processed through the party’s internal mechanisms.
“Maraga, having listened to their allegations, also requested them to present their individual written complaints for due processing,” the statement read.

The party said the complainants later met Maraga on October 22, 2025, demanding the immediate suspension of the accused official without a hearing based on unwritten allegations.
UGM maintained that the party followed due process in handling the matter.
A Commitee Was Established
The statement noted that a formal joint complaint was eventually submitted on November 3 2025, alleging incidents of sexual harassment between June and August 2025.
The party said the National Executive Committee (NEC) later established an Ad-Hoc Complaint Committee to investigate the allegations in line with the UGM Constitution.
However, UGM claimed Shakira did not cooperate fully with the due process.
According to UGM Shakira resigned and later communicated that she did not want to proceed with the accusations she had made.
Shakira Did Not Give Testimony
“Shakira Wafula refused to attend despite follow-ups with her to give her testimony. She categorically informed the Committee that she was no longer interested in pursuing the complaint,” the statement said.
The committee reportedly proceeded with the hearing on November 26, 2025, after hearing the remaining complainants and the accused official.
“The Ad-Hoc Committee, upon hearing the remaining complainants and the alleged perpetrator, found no evidence to support the sexual harassment allegations,” UGM stated.
Shakira Accused Of Defamation
The party further accused Shakira of engaging in what it termed a “public disinformation, character assassination and defamatory campaign” against Maraga.

UGM defended Maraga’s involvement in anti-femicide protests, saying his participation was consistent with his personality, manner and style.
The party reiterated its support for accountability in sexual abuse cases, stating that it deeply believes in the protection of everyone from sexual abuse while insisting that allegations should be handled through due process and lawful mechanisms.
