Morara Kebaso: From Furniture Business to Activism and Politics

Morara Kebaso is a Kenyan lawyer by training, businessman, activist, and politician who rose to national prominence during the 2024 Gen Z-led protests.
He gained attention after travelling across the country to inspect government-funded projects and publishing videos questioning their implementation and the use of public funds.
His videos, known as the “Vampire Diaries,” showed him visiting projects he said were incomplete, stalled, or did not reflect the amounts allocated to them. He often used President William Ruto’s accent, mannerisms, and style of dressing as part of the videos.
The videos drew a large following on social media and brought Kebaso into the national debate over government spending, public projects, and accountability.
Education
Kebaso began his secondary education at Maseno School, where he was involved in music and drama. His time at the school was cut short after he was expelled.

He later transferred to St Francis Gekendo Secondary School in Nyamira County, where he completed his secondary education.
After high school, Kebaso joined Kenyatta University, where he studied for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
His Life Before Activism
Before becoming known for his activism and politics, Kebaso was involved in different jobs and businesses.
He has previously worked as a waiter and merchandiser and also taught Mathematics and Physics. He later ventured into several businesses, including online writing, insurance and land-related activities.
In 2018, he founded Morara Home Furniture, a furniture business based in Nairobi. The business became a major part of his career before his activism brought him national attention.
Kebaso has also spoken publicly about his family background. His roots are in the Gusii community, and his family has a history of involvement in politics and public affairs. His grandfather, George Morara, was a former West Mugirango MP.
How He Became an Activist
Kebaso’s public profile changed significantly in 2024.
As young Kenyans took to the streets to protest against the government and demand greater accountability, he began travelling to different parts of the country to examine government projects.
He recorded videos from the sites and raised questions about the condition of the projects and the amount of money allocated to them.
His use of President Ruto’s voice, accent, and mannerisms became a regular feature of the videos. The approach helped his content spread widely online.
Rather than discussing public spending only from political platforms, Kebaso took his audience to the actual project sites and showed them what he found.
Kebaso’s activism also brought him into conflict with authorities.
In 2024, he was arrested and faced charges linked to material he had published online, including a cyber-harassment case. His lawyers challenged the charges as the case proceeded through the courts.
The arrest added to the attention around his activities and placed him at the centre of wider discussions about freedom of expression, online activism and government accountability.
From activism to politics
Kebaso later decided to take his activism into electoral politics.
He founded the Inclusive National Justice, Economic and Civic Transformation Party (INJECT) as he sought to establish a political vehicle outside the country’s established parties.

His political journey, however, did not follow a straight path. At one point, he announced that he was stepping away from politics. He later returned to active politics.
In 2026, Kebaso joined the Jubilee Party and announced his intention to contest the Borabu parliamentary seat in Nyamira County in the 2027 General Election.
Since turning his attention to Borabu, Kebaso has continued to focus on public projects and the use of public funds.
Family life
Kebaso is a father of three children.
He was previously married to Mercy Makini, who was also involved in Morara Home Furniture. He is currently in a relationship with Pauline Morara.
