MP Loses Husband, Former High Court Judge, After Sudden Illness

Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu is mourning the death of her husband, Justice Joseph Mutava Mbalu, a former Judge of the High Court of Kenya who passed away on Saturday morning while receiving medical attention following a sudden illness.

According to preliminary reports, Justice Mbalu suddenly fell ill on Friday night and was rushed for medical attention at Makindu Orthopaedic and Trauma Hospital, where he was receiving treatment when he passed away.

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of the late Justice Joseph Mutava Mbalu, former Judge of the High Court of Kenya and husband to Hon Jessica Mbalu MP for Kibwezi East,” read part of the statement.

Kenyans Send Condolence Messages

His sudden death has sparked an outpouring of condolences from Kenyans, with many expressing shock and sadness over the loss.

Messages of sympathy have been directed to Jessica Mbalu, the Mutava family, relatives, friends and the people of Kibwezi East, with many describing the passing as a great loss to the family and the wider community.

“It is indeed a sad moment for Hon Jessica Mbalu and the Mutava family, and largely Kibwezi East Constituency. May the soul of Justice Joseph Mbalu rest in eternal peace,” Mary Muinde Ndunge stated.

Kenyans have also prayed for God to give the bereaved family strength, comfort and peace as they come to terms with the sudden loss, while wishing Justice Joseph Mutava Mbalu eternal rest.

“May his soul rest in peace and God’s comfort to the entire Mutava family, Mama Safi, Hon. Jessica Mbalu,” Ndambuki said wrote on Facebook.

Justice Mutava’s Ongoing Case

Justice Joseph Mutava Mbalu served as a Judge of the High Court of Kenya before his death.

The former Justice had previously made headlines in connection with a bribery investigation during his career.

Joseph Mutava Mbalu was among four suspects who were arrested following allegations that he had solicited a Ksh10.4 million bribe to influence the outcome of a commercial dispute pending before the High Court.

However, they were subsequently granted cash bail of Ksh200,000 each as investigations continued.

Meanwhile, Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu had been married to Justice Joseph Mutava Mbalu for close to 16 years, and the couple was blessed with two sons.

The family has, however, faced a devastating loss before after one of their sons died in 2024 following a road accident.
