Mukunji Lawyers Fire Back After Police Pursuit Claims, Demand Answers

Lawyers representing Manyatta MP John Mukunji have demanded an impartial investigation into the deaths at Nembure Grounds in Embu County on September 12, questioning the circumstances surrounding the shootings and the alleged pursuit of their client.

In a statement dated Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Ndegwa & Ndegwa Advocates said Mukunji learnt through Government Spokesperson Charles Owino that the National Police Service was allegedly pursuing him over the incident.

Mukunji Lawyers Question Police Position

Advocates said the statement attributed to Owino conflicted with an earlier position by Police Spokesperson Michael Nyaga Muchiri that Mukunji was not under investigation or pursuit.

The conflicting accounts, according to the letter, have left Mukunji and his family uncertain about the position being taken by State agencies.

Mukunji has also distanced himself from the violence at Nembure Grounds, where the lawyers say two people died and property was destroyed.

“Our client categorically, unequivocally, and without any reservation whatsoever, distances himself from the chaos, violence, and disorder that erupted at Nembure Ground,” the advocates said.

The legal team said Mukunji condemned the incident and wants investigators to establish what happened without political interference, selective prosecution, or other considerations, calling for a thorough, transparent, independent, and wholly impartial investigation into the events.

Lawyers Question Fatal Shootings

The statement states that the two people who died at Nembure Grounds succumbed to gunshot injuries, prompting the lawyers to demand answers over how the victims were killed.

“Who fired the fatal shots? Who issued the orders to shoot to kill?” the advocates asked.

Questions were raised, with reference to remarks attributed to Interior Cabinet Secretary Abraham Kithure Kindiki, whom the lawyers said had been heard issuing such orders.

Advocates argued that establishing responsibility for the deaths was central to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for the violence, rejecting any attempt to link Mukunji to the deaths or destruction witnessed during the incident.

His legal team said any investigation should examine the events impartially rather than focus selectively on their client with advocates further maintaining that Mukunji remains ready to cooperate with any lawful investigation conducted by the relevant authorities.

Lawyers Raise Family Intimidation Claims

Beyond the investigation, Mukunji’s lawyers accused police of harassing and intimidating his family, including his young school-going children.

They claimed officers had been hovering around and loitering near the family’s homestead, which they described as surveillance and intimidation.

Lawyers demanded that the National Police Service (NPS) immediately stop the alleged harassment, arguing that Mukunji’s family members had no connection to the Nembure incident.

Should investigators require Mukunji’s attendance, the lawyers instructed police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to send any summons or correspondence through their offices, stating that Mukunji will cooperate with a lawful process but warns against attempts to frame him or make him a scapegoat.

“Our client will not be intimidated, nor will he be silenced,” the advocates said.

They also challenged statements attributed to Owino, arguing that the remarks suggested the pursuit of Mukunji was coming from the Executive rather than the police acting independently.

The lawyers have warned that continued alleged violations of Mukunji’s rights or those of his family would attract legal action.
