A Nairobi man who appeared in a viral video asking God to “take away” President William Ruto has reportedly been arrested.

In a statement dated October 2, Mogotio Member of Parliament Reuben Kiborek said the man had been taken into custody following the circulation of the video online.

“The Boy has been arrested. Thank you. Endelea kupiga kelele, President @WilliamsRuto must be RESPECTED,” Kiborek said in a post on X.

However, the MP did not provide details on when or where the arrest was made or the specific charges the man may face.

The arrest claim came after a video circulated online in which the man appeared to celebrate the reported death of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

Chivayo, who was known for his close association with several African political figures, died alongside his wife and four other people in a helicopter crash in Zimbabwe , on October 1, 2026, with authorities confirming that there were no survivors.

In the video, the man thanked God for Chivayo’s death before turning his attention to President Ruto.

He repeatedly asked God to take away the Kenyan President, while also describing plans to celebrate if that happened.

“Thank God for taking Chivayo. You did a good job, just like the Kenyans. We are happy. And then next , don’t worry about taking William Ruto after two weeks. Don’t worry about taking William Ruto. Please. Take William Ruto. Take William Ruto ,” the man said.

The remarks included references to visiting different parts of Nairobi and spending money on entertainment and other activities as a way of showing his hapiness if God fulfills his desire.

He also appeared to call on other Kenyans to join in what he described as a period of celebration following Chivayo’s death.

“It is going to be a holiday, and even today I have declared that from today until the day Chivayo is buried, we Kenyans are on holiday, and we are happy because of Chivayo’s death. And if you are Kenyan and you are not celebrating, then we have a problem with you, and we will deal with you.”

Kenyans Raise Questions Over Arrest and Freedom of Worship

Chivayo’s death had attracted attention in Kenya because of his publicly documented relationship with President Ruto.

Following news of the helicopter crash, Ruto mourned Chivayo, describing him as a “dear friend” and saying he would remember him for his friendship, energy and belief in Africa’s potential.

Chivayo had also recently been reported to have met Ruto at State House in Nairobi, where he discussed plans to invest about US$200 million in Kenya through infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, the young mans arrest has sparked debate on social media, with some Kenyans questioning the grounds for the man’s detention and what charges he could face.

“What are the charges ama Ruto will appear in court to defend his claim of defamation,” said Murrabi on X.

One social media user questioned what charges would be brought against him, while another asked whether making prayers required government approval.

“Boss are u mad? Don’t we have freedom of worship? Do prayers now have to be approved by government before being passed on to God? Shame on you,” said Martin Guchu on X.

Others however, reacted to the MP’s statement that the President “must be respected,” with some arguing that arresting the man would not prevent people from expressing their views.
