Profile of Adan Mohamed, New KRA Commissioner-General

Adan Mohamed, born on December 1, 1963, in Mandera, is the newly appointed Commissioner-General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

His appointment was announced on May 18, 2026, by National Treasury CS John Mbadi in the Kenya Gazette.

Adan has previously served in the Cabinet under former president Uhuru Kenyatta, in the position of Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization, Trade, and Cooperatives between 2013 and 2018.

He later served as Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community and Regional Development.

During his tenure in the Industrialization ministry, Mohamed oversaw reforms aimed at improving Kenya’s business environment.

Under the programme, Kenya improved its ranking in the World Bank Ease of Doing Business Index from position 136 in 2014 to position 56 in 2018.

Adan also led the development of the Kenya Industrial Transformation Programme (KITP) and helped formulate Kenya’s first Trade Policy.

In 2015, he briefly served as Acting Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries.

Banking Sector Career

Before joining the government, Adan built a long career in the banking sector.

He served as Chief Administrative Officer for Barclays Africa, overseeing operations across ten African subsidiaries.

He had earlier spent more than a decade as Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Bank Kenya and also served as Managing Director for Barclays East and West Africa.

During his leadership, Barclays Kenya won the Banker Awards in 2009.

Adan’s Academics

Mohamed began his professional career at PricewaterhouseCoopers in London, where he trained as a Chartered Accountant and worked in management consultancy and business advisory services.

He also worked at Shell in Nigeria during his early consulting career.

Academically, Adan holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School and a First Class Honours degree in Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi.

He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

Awards

Adan attended Elwak Primary School before joining Kangaru High School in Embu County for his secondary education.

In 2017, he received the African Leadership Excellence Award for his role in promoting Kenya as a regional trade and investment hub.

He was also awarded the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) for distinguished service to the country.
