President William Ruto says teachers will start receiving their pension within 10 days of retirement.

Speaking in Kasarani during World Teachers’ Day celebrations, Ruto said his administration is working to ensure teachers receive their pension payments promptly after retirement.

“Agencies responsible have assured me that within the next three months, teachers will begin receiving their pension within 10 days of retirement,” Ruto said.

Ruto further noted that the government was working with the agencies responsible for processing retirement benefits to ensure that teachers do not have to wait for prolonged periods after retirement.

Teacher’s Concerns

The announcement comes as teachers across the country continue to raise concerns over the processing and payment of retirement benefits, with delays potentially affecting retirees who depend on their pension after leaving employment.

Under the proposed arrangement, teachers who retire would be expected to receive their pension within ten days, once the new system is implemented and the necessary processes have been completed.

The President said the three-month period would be used to put the necessary measures in place before the new timeline takes effect.

Ruto made the remarks during celebrations to mark World Teachers’ Day, an annual event held to recognise the contribution of teachers to education and society.

Proposed Timeline

The occasion also brought together education stakeholders, including teachers and government officials, to reflect on the role of educators and challenges facing the teaching profession.

The proposed pension payment timeline is expected to ease the transition for teachers leaving the profession by giving them quicker access to their retirement benefits.

The government has previously announced various measures aimed at improving the welfare of teachers, including initiatives addressing their working conditions, remuneration and retirement benefits.

If implemented as announced, the new arrangement would represent a significant reduction in the waiting period for retired teachers and could provide them with greater financial certainty immediately after retirement.

Ruto said the relevant agencies had given him an assurance that the new arrangement would be operational within the next three months.
