Ruto’s Security Detail Changed After Security Breach in Kilifi

President William Ruto’s security arrangements have been following a security breach in Kilifi, where a man stormed the podium and approached the President during a public event.
In the changes, William Sawe has been appointed Presidential Escort Commander, while Noah Miyo has been redeployed to Vigilance House.
Judah Mathews from Deputy Commandant will proceed on leave pending retirement, while George Kirera moves from Staffing Officer, Personnel PEU, to Deputy Commandant PEU.
Josephat Sirima moves from Deputy Commanding Officer, Recce Sub Unit, to Commanding Officer, Recce Sub Unit, while Rere Kipkoech is transferred from Deputy SOB 1 to Kenya Police Headquarters.
IG Kanja Earlier Directives
In a statement, the National Police Service addressed the security breach that occurred today, 24 May 2026, during a thanksgiving event in Ganze, Kilifi County, where President Ruto was addressing members of the public.
IG Douglas Kanja described the breach as “serious,” noting that although security agencies acted quickly and decisively to contain the situation and restore order, any violation involving the President’s security is unacceptable and of grave national concern.
“Although security agencies responded swiftly and decisively to contain the situation and restore order, any breach involving the security of the President is unacceptable and a matter of the gravest national concern,” Kanja said.
Ruto Security Changed Amid Investigations
Kanja said he has constituted a special investigations team to swiftly, thoroughly, and uncompromisingly investigate how the security breach occurred.
He also said he has ordered immediate changes to the President’s security detail to strengthen protocols and eliminate any existing vulnerabilities.
“As the Inspector General of the National Police Service, I have immediately constituted a special investigations team to conduct a swift, thorough, and uncompromising inquiry into how this breach occurred. I have also ordered immediate changes to the security detail responsible for the President’s protection in order to strengthen protocols and seal any existing vulnerabilities,” Kanja said.
Warning to Kenyans
Kanja also sent a warning to Kenyan attending public events, stating that they should adhere to established protocols when attending events presided over by President Ruto.
He further reiterated that the National Police Service (NPS) remains focused on ensuring the safety of all Kenyans.
Kanja said the NPS has taken appropriate steps to maintain high security standards for President Ruto and to prevent a recurrence of such security breaches.
