The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) employee attached to the Mbale-Vihiga Office over alleged bribery involving Ksh 20,000.

In a statement, EACC said the suspect, Kennedy Wambani Oduor, was arrested following investigations into allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe from God’s Vision for Africa in Vihiga.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) yesterday arrested an employee of the Kenya Power & Lighting Company (KPLC) attached to the Mbale-Vihiga Office following investigations into bribery allegations,” the commission said.

According to EACC, the matter dates back to October 2022, when God’s Vision for Africa in Vihiga reported a damaged and dangerous electricity pole near its premises.

The organisation reportedly made several reports to KPLC seeking intervention, but no action was taken.

Dangerous Electricity Pole Triggered Dispute

EACC said the organisation later opted to replace the rotten electricity pole using a private contractor to prevent possible electrocution and fire incidents around its premises.

“The matter arose after God’s Vision for Africa in Vihiga reported a damaged and dangerous electricity pole near its premises in October 2022. Despite several reports made to KPLC, no action was taken, prompting the organization to replace the rotten pole through a private contractor to avert the risk of electrocution and fire,” the statement read.

Investigations by the anti-graft agency established that Oduor allegedly became angered by the replacement of the pole and threatened to disconnect the electricity supply to the organisation unless he was paid a bribe.

“Investigations established that Mr. Oduor allegedly became agitated over the replacement and threatened to disconnect the organization’s power supply unless he was paid a bribe of Ksh 50,000,” EACC stated.

EACC Operation Leads To Arrest

Following the complaint, the matter was reported to EACC, which launched investigations before carrying out an operation that culminated in the suspect’s arrest.

“The matter was subsequently reported to EACC, which commenced investigations. Following preliminary findings, the Commission mounted an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect while receiving Ksh 20,000,” the commission said.

Upon completion of investigations, EACC forwarded the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who approved bribery charges against the suspect.

“Upon conclusion of investigations, the file was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who approved bribery charges against the suspect under Section 6(1)(a) as read together with Section 18(1) and (2) of the Anti-Bribery Act, No. 47 of 2016,” EACC added.

Suspect Arraigned In Kisumu Court

The suspect was booked at Kisumu Central Police Station before being arraigned before the Kisumu Anti-Corruption Court on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.

EACC said the court later released the suspect on a cash bail of Ksh 200,000 with a surety of a similar amount as the bribery case proceeds.

“The suspect was booked at Kisumu Central Police Station and arraigned before the Kisumu Anti-Corruption Court on 7 May 2026. He was later released by the court on a cash bail of Ksh 200,000 with a surety of a similar amount,” the commission stated.
