A man in Garissa has been sentenced by the court to 20 years in prison for defiling and later killing his 17-year-old niece at their home in 2025.
According to the Office Of The Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) the court heard that the accused committed the said crime on November 16 2025, at Borehole 5 in Fafi Sub-County in Garissa County.
The case was handled by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Linda Nyauncho.
Justice Onyiego said while sentencing the accused, who is Shafa Bilal Shaklane, that the evidence that was presented in court by the prosecution proved that the accused was guilty.
A 13-year-old minor who is a sister to the deceased told the court that the accused person killed her sister on a date that she could not remember.
The accused man, as established by the court, decided to murder is 17 year old nice because she rejected his sexual advances towards her.
The minor also testified and told the court that on the night of the crime, they were in the house sleeping on a mattress when she saw the accused approaching the deceased, who was sleeping on a different mattress, and started touching her breasts.
The young girl additionally told the court that when she resisted his advances, the accused took a scarf and strangled her as he pushed her against the wall.

Medical evidence showing how the deceased succumbed to her death was provided in court as evidence against the accused.
The ODPP said that the medical evidence, which was presented in court, confirmed that the deceased died of hypoxia.

Hypoxia is a medical term for lack of oxygen to the brain; this and being strangled are what killed the deceased.
The court also cited that the minor who testified before the court did not have any reason to lie against her uncle, with whom she had no bad blood.
