The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for various regions of the country as mid-May approaches.
In its seven-day forecast covering May 12 to May 18, 2026, Kenya Met said rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, parts of the Coast, and Northwestern Kenya.
According to the weatherman, heavy rainfall may occur in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley during the first half of the forecast period. However, the intensity is expected to reduce from May 15, 2026.
At the same time, daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected in the Coast region, the Southeastern lowlands, Northeastern Kenya, and Northwestern Kenya.
Night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to fall below 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and areas around Mt. Kilimanjaro.
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, morning rains are likely in a few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in several places during the first half of the forecast period, then decreasing thereafter. Night showers are also likely in a few areas.
Counties in these regions include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok.
In Northwestern Kenya, including Turkana and Samburu counties, morning rains are likely in a few to several places during the first half of the forecast period. Afternoon and night showers are also expected in a few places during the same period.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes Nairobi and its surrounding areas, morning rains are likely in a few places during the first half of the forecast period.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in several places before reducing to a few areas later in the week. Night showers are also likely in a few places.
Other counties in this region include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi.

In Northeastern Kenya, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties, sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night.
However, morning rains, as well as afternoon and night showers, may occur in a few places during the first half of the forecast period.
The Southeastern lowlands, comprising Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, are expected to experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night.
However, morning rains and afternoon and night showers may occur in a few places.
In the Coast region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, as well as the Tana Delta, morning, afternoon, and night showers are likely in a few places during the first half of the forecast period.
