Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified efforts to consolidate the Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election, calling for unity among leaders opposed to President William Ruto during a public gathering in Nyandarua County.

Speaking at the funeral of Ann Nyatoro Ndung’u, the mother of Kanini Kega, Gachagua extended an olive branch to Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi faction, insisting that only a united political front would have the strength to unseat the Kenya Kwanza administration in the next presidential contest.

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader said the Opposition could not afford fragmentation at a time when the country was grappling with political and economic challenges.

He maintained that collaboration among Opposition figures would form the backbone of a formidable campaign machinery against Ruto’s re-election bid.

Gachagua Warns Sifuna Over Chopper Travel

In remarks that drew reactions from mourners and political allies alike, Gachagua cautioned Sifuna against using helicopters while traversing the country for political engagements, alleging that critics of the government could be exposed to danger.

“Hao vijana kina Sifuna wametoka hapa tutafanya kazi nao na nimemkataza aache kusafiri na ndege, atumie magari kama sisi, mnafikiria hatuwezi nunua ndege, tunajua wanaweza tuteremsha kutoka juu,” Gachagua stated.

He further emphasized that the Nairobi Senator remained an influential young political figure whose safety should be prioritized.

“Nimemwambia kwa sababu wewe ni mdogo na una ushawishi mkubwa Kenya na hii nchi inakutegemea hiyo chopper unatumia wachana nayo, ndege tunaweza nunua na twende nayo lakini nchi inatuhitaji na tuko na bibi na watoto ambao wanatuhitaji,” he added.

Tough Warning to Mt Kenya ‘Betrayers’

Gachagua also turned his attention to leaders from the Mt Kenya region, whom he accused of abandoning community interests in favor of political loyalty to President Ruto, whom he referred to as “Kasongo.”

The former Deputy President declared that leaders perceived to be collaborating with the government at the expense of the region would face political consequences once he returns from an upcoming trip to London.

“We must deal with betrayers, those who are selling our community; we must deal with them, we must fix it. We must vote out all those who are selling out our community. When they walk with Kasongo when he destroys our homes in Nairobi, killing our children, and they’re praising him, we must deal with them,” Gachagua said.

Sifuna Backs United Opposition Ticket

On his part, Sifuna echoed the call for Opposition unity, arguing that defeating President Ruto would only be possible through a collective political strategy that brings together leaders across rival camps.

“But Mheshimiwa Riggy G, we are convinced that there is no other formula other than a united ticket against William Ruto, so whatever needs to be done, kama nikusamehe. Tusameheane tu, lakini haiwezekani tumpatie huyu ndugu yetu nafasi arudi kwa hiyo kiti aendelee kukandamiza watu wetu,” Sifuna stated.
