Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains and Cold Nights in Final Week of May

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has warned of heavy rainfall and cold nights in several parts of the country during the final week of May 2026.

In its weekly weather forecast published on Monday, May 25, 2026, Kenya Met said rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the Coast, and parts of Northeastern Kenya.

The department also warned that some coastal areas could experience heavy rainfall events during the forecast period.

Kenya Met Warns of Daytime Temperatures Exceeding 30°C in Parts of the Country

According to the forecast, daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected along the Coast, parts of the Southeastern Lowlands, and sections of Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya.

At the same time, night-time temperatures are expected to fall below 10°C in parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Kenya Met said counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley are likely to experience sunny intervals in the mornings, followed by afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms in some areas.

The affected counties include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok.

In Northwestern Kenya, including Turkana and Samburu counties, sunny intervals are expected during the day while nights are likely to remain partly cloudy.

Weather Forecast for Nairobi and its Environs

Meanwhile, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and nearby counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi and Kirinyaga, are expected to experience cloudy mornings followed by sunny intervals and occasional afternoon and night showers.

In Northeastern Kenya, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties, sunny conditions are expected during the day with partly cloudy nights.

However, morning rains and afternoon showers may occur in some areas during the second half of the forecast period.

In the South Eastern Lowlands, covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River County, sunny intervals are expected during the day, while nights are likely to remain partly cloudy. However, Kenya Met said afternoon showers may occur in a few places.

Kenya Met further said the Coast region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the Tana Delta, is likely to receive occasional morning, afternoon, and night showers, which may spread to several places.
