KenGen Seeks EPRA Approval for Power Transmission in Green Energy Park

Kenya Electricity Generating Company Plc (KenGen) has announced plans to apply for electricity transmission and distribution licences for its upcoming KenGen Green Energy Park project.
The application is set to be submitted to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on June 2, 2026, in line with Section 119 (3) of the Energy Act, 2019.
In a notice dated May, 26, Austin Ouko, Company Secretary and General Manager, Legal Affairs, stated that it is seeking approval to establish electricity power transmission and distribution infrastructure within the Green Energy Park.
“NOTICE is hereby given that Kenya Electricity Generating Company Plc, a public limited company having its registered office at KenGen Pension Plaza II, Kolobot Road, Parklands. P.O. Box 47936-00100, Nairobi in the Republic of Kenya (“The Applicant”), pursuant to the provisions of section 119 (3) of the Energy Act, 2019, will on 2nd of June 2026, make an application to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (the Regulator) for the Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Licenses for KenGen Green Energy Park,” read part of the notice.
The company added that the application is part of its broader strategy to enhance clean energy development in Kenya.
KenGen Submits Application for Transmission and Distribution Approval
According to KenGen, the proposed licences will allow the company to operate internal electricity transmission and distribution networks within the Green Energy Park.
The company also highlighted that the project is not expected to have any adverse impact on surrounding public institutions, companies, or individuals, positioning it as a controlled energy system designed to support efficient power management within the designated development area.
“The grant of the Licenses will not have any adverse effect on public or local authorities, companies, persons, or bodies of persons within the areas of the undertaking,” read part of the notice

Additionally, the company noted that the documents, once the licences are granted, together with any additional required particulars, will remain available for public inspection at the same office.

How Members of the Public Can Object
KenGen also outlined the procedure for objections, stating that any public or local authority, person, or group wishing to raise concerns must submit a written representation to EPRA.
The company added that they must be clearly marked “Transmission and Distribution Licences Objection” and submitted within thirty (30) days from the date of application, and a copy forwarded to KenGen.
“Any public or local authority, person or body of persons desirous of making any representation on or objection to the application must do so by a letter addressed to the Regulator and marked on the outside of the cover enclosing it “Transmission and Distribution Licences Objection” on or before the expiration of thirty (30) days from the date of application and must forward to the applicant a copy of such representation or objection,” read part of the notice.
