Kenyans have raised concerns after experiencing difficulties accessing the Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) iTax portal, with many reporting that the system’s password change feature has failed just hours before the tax return filing deadline.

According to several taxpayers, the password reset function has not been working since Friday, leaving those affected unable to log into their iTax accounts and submit their annual tax returns.

Kenyans who need to change their passwords have been unable to complete the process, effectively locking them out of the iTax platform.

“The iTax password change feature has not been working since Friday. As a result, affected taxpayers are unable to access iTax and file their tax returns,” read one of the comment.

Others said the problem extends beyond password changes, with some Kenyans reporting that they were not receiving the One-Time Passwords (OTPs) required to access their accounts.

“Also we are not receiving the OTPs,” another taxpayer stated.

They have further called on the KRA to provide an update on the cause of the disruption and communicate when normal services are expected to resume.

However, the latest complaints come shortly after KRA acknowledged intermittent access and slow loading on the iTax portal, attributing the disruptions to heavy traffic as taxpayers rushed to file their returns ahead of the June 30 deadline.

The tax authority also assured taxpayers that the technical issues had been resolved and that the system was fully operational.

KRA also advised users experiencing discrepancies on the Shuru WhatsApp platform to file their returns using the IT1 return template.

Additionally, the authority clarified that missing Pay As You Earn (PAYE) entries for November and December 2025 would automatically reflect once taxpayers’ ledger accounts were updated.

“We are trying everything you have listed since last week and nothing is working. What is the problem with the password reset?”

KRA further warned that taxpayers who fail to file their annual returns by the June 30 deadline risk more than just penalties, saying they could also be subjected to default tax assessments.

The authority noted that millions of Kenyans have already filed their returns and urged those yet to comply not to wait until the final hours, warning that increased traffic on its digital platforms could result in slower response times.
