President William Ruto is set to commission a new 150-bed Level 4 hospital in Ruiru on Monday, opening a facility equipped with intensive care, maternity, renal, pediatric and other specialized services to members of the public.
Located at the Kenya Prisons Staff Training College, Wanini Kireri Magereza Level 4 Hospital began offering outpatient services in March following its operationalization.
Initially established to strengthen healthcare provision within the correctional system, the hospital is expected to serve correctional officers, inmates and residents from the surrounding community.
Ruto directed the facility’s operationalization during the February pass-out parade for Kenya Prisons Service recruits, paving the way for the hospital to begin serving patients.
Hospital Brings Specialized Care to Ruiru
Wanini Kireri Magereza Level 4 Hospital has been equipped to handle both routine treatment and more complex medical needs.
Among its key sections are an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), Radiology Unit, Dental Unit, maternity wing, male and female wards and a pediatric ward.
Patients will also have access to specialized services, including dental and renal care.
Outpatient treatment began in March as the first phase of operations, with inpatient and specialized care forming part of the hospital’s wider rollout following commissioning.
For residents around Ruiru, the hospital’s opening could provide an additional option for accessing specialized treatment while easing pressure on existing health facilities.

Facility Opens Doors to Public
Correctional services officers and their dependants will access medical care through the Social Health Authority (SHA) Usalama Cover Public Officers Medical Scheme.
The scheme provides for outpatient and inpatient treatment, maternity care, specialized services and emergency evacuation.
Beyond serving the correctional services fraternity, the government plans to open the hospital to members of the public after Monday’s commissioning.
That move gives the facility a wider role in the community and expands the number of people who can benefit from the infrastructure and specialized equipment already in place.
Ruto Directive Fast-Tracked Hospital
Construction and operationalization of the facility gained fresh momentum after Ruto issued a directive during the February pass-out parade for 3,862 Kenya Prisons Service recruits.
The President directed the State Department for Correctional Services to work with Kiambu County Government and other government agencies to ensure the hospital became operational.
By March, the facility had begun offering outpatient services, marking the first stage of its rollout.
A commissioning committee chaired by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Salome Beacco met on Wednesday to review progress and receive an update from the hospital administration.
Commissioning on Monday will mark the next phase, allowing the hospital to expand into inpatient and specialized services while opening its facilities to members of the public.

A new healthcare option for Ruiru
Beyond its role within the correctional system, the hospital’s public access component could make it an important addition to Ruiru’s growing healthcare network.
Its 150-bed capacity, combined with intensive care, maternity, pediatric, diagnostic and specialized services, gives it the ability to handle a wider range of cases than a basic outpatient facility.
For the government, the project also offers a way of extending infrastructure developed for public officers and correctional services to the surrounding community.
With the commissioning now set for Monday, attention will shift from construction and preparation to how quickly the hospital can scale its services and how effectively it will serve both correctional services personnel and the wider public.
