At least eight people are feared dead following a grisly road accident involving a matatu and a saloon car along Mombasa Road.

The two vehicles reportedly collided head-on near Syokimau, near Naivas Supermarket, at around 12:45 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026.

Preliminary reports indicate that three people died at the scene following the impact, while others sustained injuries and were rushed to various hospitals for medical attention.

Emergency responders moved quickly to the scene to rescue those involved in the crash. Police officers also arrived shortly after the accident and began responding to the incident.

However, authorities were yet to confirm the identities of those killed or the exact number of people injured in the Syokimau crash at the time of the publication.

Mombasa Road Records More Fatal Crashes

The latest crash comes amid a series of accidents reported along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in recent months.

For instance, on July 18, a concrete mixer lorry overturned along Mombasa Road in Syokimau, triggering a major traffic snarl-up and disrupting motorists.

Earlier, on July 7, six people died after two lorries and a passenger bus collided at Kapiti Plains along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Consequently, the recent incidents have renewed concerns about road safety along the highway, which carries thousands of motorists and passengers daily.

Kenya Red Cross Raises Road Safety Concerns

Against this backdrop, the Kenya Red Cross has highlighted the growing number of crashes and fatalities recorded across the country.

“Kenya Red Cross has recorded 33 road crashes, 180 casualties, and 40 deaths this August alone (as of the 20th). NTSA data shows 2,150 lives lost between January and June this year,” they reported.

The Kenya Red Cross shared the figures on Thursday, August 20, during a media roundtable on road safety convened by the International Centre for Humanitarian Affairs (ICHA).

During the meeting, participants called for a shift from reacting to crashes after they happen to preventing them before they occur.

In addition, the discussions proposed amending Section 42 of the Traffic Act to strengthen speed management in high-risk areas. The meeting also promoted the Safe System Approach as a strategy for reducing road deaths.
