The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested three suspects in connection with an attempted highway robbery in which police shot one of their accomplices.

According to the DCI, the arrests came less than three months after detectives issued a public warning to transit drivers following an attack along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

The gang carried out the attack on May 6, 2026, near the Mutomo area in Mtito Andei. The suspects allegedly used a motorbike to stage a fake roadside emergency and lure a transit driver into stopping.

After the driver stopped, the suspects allegedly attempted to hijack his Subaru Impreza at gunpoint.

Matters then escalated when they started struggling with the driver; then the gang’s firearm discharged, shooting one of the gang members known as Gift Musau.

After the incident, the accomplices fled the scene, leaving their dead colleague behind with the driver.

Detectives then launched sustained operations and intelligence-led investigations to start looking for the suspects who were at large.

On August 21 2026, detectives tracked down and arrested two suspects from their hideout in Kinyambu.

Suspects Arrested

The suspects have been identified as Alex Mueti Kasina and Stephen Kalunho Joel, while detectives are still searching for the third suspect.

On August 22, 2026, detectives arrested another suspect, Jamlick Muli Muasa, also known as Star, at his shop in Kinyambu.

Detectives searched his shop and residence and recovered two mobile phones. A separate search at his residence in Makiuu, Kinyambu, led to the recovery of additional items.

The recovered items included several identity cards bearing different names, multiple driving licences bearing different names, and other items that detectives believe the suspects used in criminal activities.

The DCI says that it remains relentless in pursuing criminals and dismantling networks that prey on Kenyans and other road users.
