Mathari Hospital Announces Vacancy for CEO Position

Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital (MNTRH) has announced a vacancy for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), to steer Kenya’s premier mental health institution.

The hospital’s Board of Directors declared the vacancy under powers conferred by the Constitution of Kenya, the State Corporations Act, and Legal Notice No. 165 of 2020, which operationalized Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital as a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency (SAGA).

According to the vacancy notice, the successful candidate will be appointed on a three-year contract, renewable subject to performance, and will be based at the hospital’s Nairobi headquarters.

“Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital invites applications from suitably qualified, dynamic, visionary, and results-oriented Kenyans to fill the following vacant position: Chief Executive Officer (CEO),” the notice stated.

Mathari Hospital CEO Responsibilities

The newly recruited CEO will manage the affairs of the hospital and oversee its administration under the direction and supervision of the Board of Directors.

According to the job vacancy notice, the CEO will serve as the hospital’s accounting officer, implement board decisions, and provide strategic leadership to develop work plans, budgets, and procurement plans.

The CEO will also advise the board and management team on good governance principles, ensure compliance with government policies and guidelines, develop and implement hospital strategies and policies, and represent the hospital in engagements with stakeholders.

Other duties will include managing the hospital’s resources, promoting performance excellence and integrity, championing resource mobilization initiatives, and mentoring junior employees.

Qualifications and Experience Required

The Board has set stringent academic and professional requirements for candidates seeking the position.

Applicants must possess at least 15 years of relevant work experience, including a minimum of 10 years in a senior management position within either the public or private sector.

Candidates are also required to hold a bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery, or another recognized health profession, as well as a master’s degree in a health-related field from a recognized institution.

“Qualifications in Business Administration or Management will be an added advantage,” Mathari Hospital noted.

Applicants must be registered with the relevant medical professional body and hold a current practicing licence or certificate.

They should also demonstrate a clear understanding of local, national, and international laws, policies, and regulatory frameworks governing the health sector, public finance management, and public procurement procedures.

The successful candidate will be expected to meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity.

How to Apply

Applicants are required to submit their applications in a sealed envelope clearly marked “Application for Chief Executive Officer – Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital.”

The application should include:

  • A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV);
  • Copies of academic and professional certificates;
  • Copy of National Identity Card or Passport;
  • Names and contacts of three referees.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to provide clearance certificates from:

  • Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA);
  • Higher Education Loans Board (HELB);
  • Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC);
  • Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI);
  • Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).

Hard-copy applications may be delivered to the Chief Executive Officer’s Office or submitted via email to boardchair@mntrh.go.ke.

The hospital said applications must be received on or before July 14, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.

“Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Canvassing in any form will lead to automatic disqualification,” the notice read.
