Nairobi, Kiambu and Central Kenya Counties Set to Experience Cool, Cloudy Weather

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has predicted generally dry weather across most parts of the country, with some areas expected to experience rainfall and cool, cloudy conditions between September 1 and 7, 2026.

In a weather forecast issued on August 31, Kenya Met said some parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Murang’a, Laikipia, Nakuru and Kilifi counties are likely to receive rainfall during the forecast period.

“Most parts of the country are expected to be generally dry. However, some parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Murang’a, Laikipia, Nakuru and Kilifi Counties are likely to receive rainfall,” read part of the forecast.

The department also warned of occasional cool and cloudy conditions in several counties during the first half of the week.

According to KMD, the affected areas include parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta.

The cool and cloudy conditions are expected mainly during the first half of the forecast period.

Kenya Met stated that Nairobi is expected to record an average maximum temperature of 27°C and a minimum of 11°C during the week.

Other central locations are also set to experience relatively cool temperatures. Nyeri is forecast to record temperatures ranging from 27°C to 10°C, while Nyahururu could record a low of 4°C.

Additionally, the weather department said morning showers are expected in a few parts of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu counties.

Afternoon showers are likely in parts of Taita-Taveta, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kirinyaga, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Nyeri, Meru, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Laikipia and Garissa.

Meanwhile, afternoon showers and thunderstorms may occur in parts of Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kisii, Migori, Nandi, Narok, Nakuru and Kakamega.

Night showers may also occur in a few parts of Kirinyaga, Embu, Nairobi, Tharaka-Nithi, Nyeri, Murang’a, Bungoma, Kisumu, Trans Nzoia, Vihiga, Kericho, Siaya and Migori.

Several Counties to Experience High Temperatures

Despite the generally dry conditions, Weatherman noted that daytime average temperatures of more than 30°C will be experienced in several counties.

These include Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia and Turkana.

Mandera is expected to record the highest temperature among the listed locations, with an average maximum of 39°C and a minimum of 24°C.

Lodwar is expected to record a maximum of 37°C, while Wajir could reach 36°C and Garissa 35°C.

In addition, Kenya Met predicted night-time average temperatures below 10°C in some parts of Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru and Narok counties.

Nyahururu is expected to record the lowest temperatures among the listed locations, with a forecast minimum of 4°C.

Narok could record a minimum of 8°C, while Laikipia is expected to reach 9°C.
