KMPDU Condemns Assault on Healthcare Workers at Gertrude’s Hospital

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has strongly condemned the assault of healthcare workers at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in Muthaiga, Nairobi.

In a statement issued on June 9, 2026, the union said relatives of a minor patient physically assaulted and intimidated a paediatric dentist, theatre staff, and members of the nursing team at the hospital on June 5.

KMPDU described the incident as disturbing and called for immediate action against those responsible.

KMPDU said violence against healthcare workers continues to threaten the safety of medical professionals across the country.

“The physical assault, intimidation, and violence meted out against a paediatric dentist, theatre staff, and members of the nursing team at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital-Muthaiga Branch by relatives of the minor patient on June 5, 2026, is decayed and preposterous,” the union said.

The union added that no healthcare worker should face threats, abuse, or physical assault while providing care to patients.

“This incident is a disturbing reminder of the growing threat of workplace violence against healthcare workers in Kenya. No healthcare worker should be subjected to threats, abuse, or physical assault while providing care to patients,” KMPDU said.

KMPDU Says Violence Threatens Healthcare Services

According to the union, attacks on healthcare workers affect more than just the victims. They also disrupt healthcare services and create unsafe environments for patients and staff.

“Violence against healthcare workers is an attack on the healthcare system itself. Such actions compromise patient care, undermine staff morale, and create unsafe working environments for both healthcare workers and patients,” the statement said.

KMPDU expressed solidarity with the affected staff and praised them for remaining professional despite the incident.

“We commend their professionalism in the face of aggression and violence,” the union said.

Call for Investigations and Arrests

KMPDU urged the National Police Service, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), and other relevant authorities to investigate the matter without delay.

The union called for the identification, arrest, and prosecution of all individuals involved in the assault.

“There must be ZERO tolerance for violence against healthcare workers,” KMPDU stated.

The union also asked the management of Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital to cooperate fully with investigators by providing all necessary information, witness accounts, hospital records, and surveillance footage.

Demand for Safe Working Conditions

KMPDU said healthcare workers have a constitutional right to dignity, security, and safe working conditions.

The union warned against any attempts to conceal details surrounding the incident and vowed to continue pushing for accountability whenever healthcare workers face violence.

“Healthcare facilities must remain places of healing and care, not arenas of intimidation, violence, and impunity,” said KMPDU Secretary General and CEO Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah.
