Nairobi County Warns Businesses Over Permit Renewal

Nairobi City County Government, led by Governor Johnson Sakaja, has launched a tough enforcement drive and directed all businesses within its jurisdiction to renew their Unified Business Permit at the earliest.

The County has put out a notice stating that offenders may be fined Ksh 50,000/ or jailed for three months.

The board gets its Own Source Revenues from Unified Business Permits to fund development and service delivery in the 17 sub-counties.

The Acting County Secretary, Godfrey Akumali, signed the notification and authorized that the inspections, Permit verification, under-charges top-up, and enforcement exercise are on.

“Operating without a valid permit is a violation of Nairobi City County Trade Licensing Act, 2019, Section 26 (3) and attracts a fine not exceeding Kenya Shillings fifty thousand or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months or both,” the notice states.

The City County has ordered traders to renew their permits via the Nairobi Pay Portal at http://www.nairoibiservices.go.ke.

Further, it has indicated Customer Service Centers where traders can settle in person at City Hall Annex, Makadara Huduma Centre, Kibra Huduma Centre, Eastleigh Huduma Centre, Dandora Customer Service Centre and Ruai Customer Service Centre.

A helpline 0730047047 has also been established for enquiries.

The County has Indicated Three Pay Points

Businesses can pay through Mpesa Pay Bill No. 6060047 with Invoice Number as Account Number.

Equity Bank Account 1600284509139 and Sidian Bank Account No. 01003710009942 are live through the Nairobi City County Revenue Collection Account.

“Note that Nairobi City County operates a NO CASH policy in revenue collections,” Akumali stated.

The notice calls for the renewal of the Unified Business Permits to be made compulsory, as county officers will do compliance surveillance in all sub-counties, and they will tax any undercharged business found based on the verification.

The county did not specify any deadline date in the notice but tied the exercise to the enforcement of the Trade Licensing Act, 2019.

Owners of any non-compliant business may be prosecuted under county law.
