Who is Killing Our Women? 10 Recent Femicide Cases Expose the Crisis

A wave of violent killings of women across Kenya has sparked national outrage, with families, communities, and rights groups demanding urgent action to address what is increasingly being described as a femicide crisis.

In multiple cases reported between March and May 2026, young women and girls were found dead under violent and suspicious circumstances, many after disappearing or being last seen with people they knew.

Many are allegedly linked to intimate relationships, abandonment, or unexplained attacks.

1. Alice Riang’a – JOOUST Student 

Alice Riang’a, a second-year student at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, was found dead in a forested area in Barkowino, Bondo, four days after she was reported missing.

Reports indicate she had been last seen after her phone went off. A postmortem revealed blunt force trauma and sexual assault.

Police later arrested a 28-year-old man believed to be romantically involved with her.

2. Consolata Githinji -Kileleshwa, Nairobi

Consolata Githinji, 22, died after falling from the sixth floor of a short-stay apartment in Kileleshwa.

CCTV footage showed her entering the apartment with a man before a suspected struggle occurred. The man claimed she jumped after an argument.

A postmortem showed multiple injuries, including fractures and a collapsed lung, suggesting assault before the fall.

3. Krystabel “Bella” Anyango – Nairobi / Syokimau

Krystabel Anyango, a 28-year-old patient coordinator, went missing after visiting her boyfriend in Syokimau.

She was later found dead inside a saloon car. Her mother reported years of alleged abuse, confinement, and financial exploitation.

Postmortem results confirmed blunt force trauma, and the suspect allegedly disappeared after being briefly arrested.

4. Anita Nyambura – Nakuru County

Anita Nyambura, an accountant at ICC College and wife to a Kenya Defence Forces officer, was fatally stabbed during a domestic dispute in Nakuru.

Reports indicate she was killed in front of her child and house help during an argument over alleged infidelity. Postmortem findings confirmed she suffered fatal stab wounds.

The suspect, her husband, was arrested following the incident, while family members allege a history of threats and unresolved domestic violence.

5. Bernadette Keziah Matuki – Kilifi County

The eight-year-old Grade 2 pupil disappeared while playing near her home in Mwenzagombe Bofa.

Her body was found dumped by the roadside near Mkoroshoni. Preliminary reports indicated she had been severely abused before her death.

6. Elizabeth Nina – Likoni, Mombasa County

Elizabeth Nina, 36 and five months pregnant, went missing after leaving home for an Eid celebration.

Her body was later found dumped in an abandoned building in Shelly Beach.

Police noted facial bruising and swelling caused by blunt force.

7. Mercy Wanjiru – Nairobi

Mercy Wanjiru left home in Ruai for a birthday party along Mombasa Road but was later found unconscious and severely injured three kilometres from the club.

She suffered head injuries and multiple broken bones before succumbing in the hospital days later.

CCTV footage showed she was left behind by friends before her disappearance.

8. Ivyne Chepkoech Cheche -Bomet County

Ivyne Chepkoech, 17, was found murdered in Merigi Town after returning home in the evening.

Her body was discovered in a nearby tea farm with severe neck and head injuries. Her boyfriend is the main suspect and reportedly surrendered after a suicide attempt.

9. Jackline Awuor – Nakuru County

Jackline Awuor, a security guard, was found dumped in a quarry in Maili Saba after failing to report to work.

Investigations revealed she had been in a strained relationship marked by alleged threats and financial disputes.

Police later arrested a suspect and recovered critical evidence, including the victim’s missing body parts.

10. Diana Cherono – Meru County

Diana Cherono, a student at RVIST, was found dead in a sewer near Meru University.

She had last spoken to her family on Good Friday before going missing.

Her body was discovered days later, over 450 kilometers from her expected location.

The motive behind her killing remains unclear.
