NPS Breaks Silence on Death of Boda Boda Rider Allegedly Beaten at Police Station

The National Police Service (NPS) has broken its silence following the death of boda boda rider Erick Otieno, whose passing has sparked public uproar after allegations that he was assaulted while in police custody.

In a statement released on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the NPS said it was providing an update on the ongoing investigation into the death of Otieno, who died at Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital in Nairobi.

According to the police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) immediately launched investigations after receiving a report of his death to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

However, the NPS said the investigations have since been taken over by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to cooperating with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority in conducting a thorough, impartial and timely investigation,” the statement read.

NPS Says It Is Cooperating With IPOA on the Death of Erick Otieno

The National Police Service said it is fully cooperating with IPOA to ensure the investigation is conducted fairly and without interference.

The police also extended their condolences to Otieno’s family, friends and loved ones, thanking them and members of the public for their cooperation during the ongoing investigations.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the late Mr. Otieno, and we are grateful for the continued cooperation and support extended by the family and members of the public,” the statement added.

Public Urged to Avoid Speculation

The NPS appealed to Kenyans to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.

The service urged members of the public to cooperate with investigators by sharing any information that could help establish what happened before Otieno’s death.
