Safaricom Addresses M-PESA-to-Airtel Money Transaction Downtime

Safaricom has confirmed a system downtime affecting M-Pesa transactions to Airtel Money after a customer reported that two separate attempts to send money were reversed.
The telecommunications company acknowledged the disruption after the complaint was raised on X, saying it was working to address the system issue affecting transfers to Airtel Money.

Customer Reports Two Reversed Transactions
The customer said they had attempted to send money from M-Pesa to Airtel Money twice on Saturday, but neither transaction went through.
“Good morning @Safaricom_Care, why are you reversing money sent to Airtel Money from Mpesa? I have tried to do 2 transactions today, but all keep getting reversed,” the customer said.
The customer also directed a query to Airtel Kenya, asking whether the problem could be originating from the network’s end.
The complaint brought attention to a disruption affecting the M-Pesa-to-Airtel Money transfer service, although no wider number of affected transactions was provided.

Safaricom Acknowledges System Issue
Responding to the complaint, Safaricom confirmed that the reversals were linked to system downtime affecting transactions to Airtel Money.
“Hi, we understand the inconvenience this has caused and are addressing the system downtime affecting the transactions to Airtel Money. Kindly bear with us,” Safaricom said.
The company did not indicate how long the downtime had lasted or provide a specific timeline for restoration of the affected service.
Safaricom’s response indicates that the transaction reversals were associated with a technical disruption affecting transfers from M-Pesa to Airtel Money.
The company said it was addressing the issue but did not provide further details on its cause.
The incident comes as mobile money transfers remain an important way of moving funds between different networks in Kenya. However, the available information does not indicate the extent of the disruption beyond the transaction reported by the customer.
